I bought more Marimo Moss Balls!

It has been two years since I last got some. Sold some, some died (water too hot) and six I kept in the office. Stay tune for an update.

This is a picture of the six surviving marimos who are currently living in my office.

Here is a close-up of two marimos. They are pearling (having oxygen bubbles)

I may put some of my newest batch for sale. It all depends if I want to keep them. When you see them up close and personal, you will know why I love them so much.

If you are living in Singapore/Malaysia and would like to meet up, let me know. There might be a gardening group gathering next month and we can meet up then.

In the meantime, I am preparing to write another article on them so if you have any questions you would like to ask, please ask them via the comment function.

Updated: For the reader from RI which I take it means Rhode Island, you can get Marimos from Ebay. For those living in Singapore, you can get them from Aquariums at Tiong Bahru, Clementi and Serangoon North. Or you can get them from me. I’ll post when I get delivery of my marimos. I may pop by Serangoon North these couple of days, I’m looking for a 3″-4″ marimo. :)

Note (28 March 2011): My apologies to those who have posted comments to my Marimos entry and not received any replies for donkey years. Been horribly busy and my email froze up on me for six weeks. Just got it fixed. Watch out for more Marimo related stuff. I have very few marimos left for sale but am looking into getting more. Watch out for me at Hortpark in May (I think). If you can’t wait email me. See ya!

  6. Hi there :)

I just got my marimo moss ball from japan as a souvenier from my colleague. I really would like some advice on how to take care of them, named them Chibi + Maru.

Is it safe to use the tap water (in Singapore) directly to change the water? I’m scared that there might be alot of chlorine?

Looking forward to your reply. Thanks alot.

  7. I’m selling some of my marimos. Email me if you want any.

Blue puppy: I use tap water with no problems. You can leave a container of tap water uncovered overnight for the chlorine to dissipate but if you have filtered water, that’ll be better.

    • Hi Velvetwriter :)

      Thanks for the reply. :)
Sorry if i sound like a worried parent. Would like to ask about the best temperature to keep marimo. Currently they are in office with me, very cold. But at night, office is very warm. Should i take them home with me for the night and bring them back to office next day? :(

      Thanks

  8. Lol! No problem. How warm is warm? I leave mine in the office. During the weekend, the a/c is off by Saturday 1pm. My marimos are doing fine.

You don’t have to bring them home. BUT no direct sunlight. They prefer cool and low/filtered light. I had some marimos accidentally placed in direct sunlight. They just broke down.

  9. :) Hi ho. I just reached home. Bought my marimo babies back home too. very exciting train ride -__-”’ aih~

My office is quite warm, probably more than 33 degree celsius. On weekdays, the last person in the office will off air-con. But on weekends it’s entirely off. So i fear for them. ^^”’

Sorry about those marimos. I too have had some accidents with my cactus. I poured too much water on them :( They were goners, all 3 pots. So i’m kind of worried about caring for marimo, even though i read lots of comments on them being tough and hardy. :p
:) Have a good night. Send my regards to your marimos~ (^_^)/

  10. Hi velvetwriter,

Can you share with us which parts of Tiong Bahru, Clementi and Serangoon North can we find the aquariums selling marimo?

    Thanks

  11. I bought two in a little souvenir jar at Akanko next to the lake they live in in Hokkaido, Japan, in Autumn 2008.

The instructions said change the water with tap water every two weeks but I haven’t always remembered.

The marimo are still fine, they don’t seem to mind a little chlorine in the water at all.

Maybe they won’t like the heat in Singapore – I’m in England so it is a lot cooler. I keep them on a windowsill out of direct sunshine.

  12. Hi there, could you tell me where in serangoon are these “balls” available? any address?

  13. In singapore, at plaza singapura this shop called toy outpost sells marmios at $17 for one.

  14. Hi!

I chanced upon your website trying to look for places to get marimo for my tank. Are you still selling them at Hort park?

    • Not recently. Been too extremely busy. I might sell them in the next Hortpark bazaar provided it is not too close to Chinese New Year.

  15. A local pet store is were I got mine, however there is a website that ships these anywere in the U.S. called liveaquaria.com just look there and go to the freshwater plants.

  16. I’m looking to purchase a few to put in my own aquarium. Willing to travel via MRT . :)

  17. Hi there, where can i buy the marimo balls? im staying at clementi.

  18. my wife just brought me home a marimo ball and it is in my tank, do they move around my just sits still , it is still cool looking

    • Congrats, Curtis.

Yeah, they are cool. ; ) They do not move around by themselves unless it is up and down due to pearling. Usually, they are pushed gently around the tank by the water filter. Give your Wifey a big hug.

      Vel

  19. Does Singapore customs allow us to buy marimo from japan ? Will it be able to pass the customs?

    • It’s not a question of whether Singapore customs will allow it or not. It is a question of whether the Japanese side will allow the sale. Go ebay and check out the Marimos on sale there.
